Value is more than the cheapest gram.

Oats and peanut butter can look inexpensive by this measure, but getting 25 g of protein from them means a bigger portion with different energy and other nutrients. They are useful supporting foods, not automatic substitutes for any other protein source.

The comparison formula

Package price ÷ protein grams in the package × 25

Protein grams in the package = package weight in grams × protein per 100 g ÷ 100. Use the purchased food state for both weights and protein.

Try your own grocery prices.

Each food page includes a package-price calculator. For raw meat, use raw-label protein with the raw package weight. For a drained food, compare drained weight with drained-food nutrition. Don’t silently price one state using another.

What we leave unknown

We have not attached a price to foods where the observed package and nutrition basis couldn’t be matched. Unknown is more useful than a precise-looking guess.
